Open House Sunday receives another Award

Northern Arizona Watercolor Society (NAWS) is the last show of the Spring Season. Friday night was the reception for the Spring Juried show.

John Salminen was the juror for the show, a signature member of American Watercolor Society (AWS) and The National Watercolor Society (NWS) to mention just a few. John has won more than 200 awards in national and international exhibitions.

With these credentials, it was an honor to receive the Juror’s Award from Mr. Salminen. For me to be selected, the one painting out of the entire show as the Juror’s Choice, is the most important award of the show. It’s like being blessed by an established voice in the art field.

It was a good spring season for juried shows and awards. Time to get ready for the fall season – it will be a working summer for me.

Studies in Value

The title I have selected for my blog is Studies in Value. Value is the influence of light to create shadows. Or, in my artwork, look for areas of high contrast where light and dark are used to focus you on the center of interest, to give a sculptural feel to a 2 dimensional surface, create excitement or a mood.

Notan Design: a Japanese word refers to the lights and darks in a painting. The foundation of any painting; which draws your eye with impact. A successful painting has a strong balance of light and darks.
