Your Personal Invitation

This is an invitation for you to follow me on by blog and watch me continue to evolve as an artist. You are with me as I take this first big step. My intent was to never become evolved with a blog. Did your mother ever tell you to, “never say never?” Mine did. I digress. My long standing excuse for not blogging was the fact there is not time in my daily schedule to maintain a blog.
Well, SAGA sponsored a workshop with artist Adele Earnshaw at the helm. Needless to say, she was terrific. I’ll step to the plate to take the credit for asking Adele to share her experiences as a professional artist with a few of my close friends – let’s say about 30 of my close friends. Part of her workshop covered the subject of personal artist blogs. She sold me hook, line and sinker along with others in the group, realizing we can’t afford not to have an artist blog.

You are welcome to Visit Adele Earnshaw’s website: http://www.adeleearnshaw.com and blog http://adeleearnshaw.blogspot.com

Therefore, welcome to Mary Dove’s Art Blog. The title I have selected for my blog is Studies in Value. Value is the influence of light to create shadows. Or, in my artwork, look for areas of high contrast where light and dark are used to focus you on the center of interest, to give a sculptural feel to a 2 dimensional surface, create excitement or a mood.
In my drawing, look for the negative space, (this is where I left the white paper to be the lightest light with the dark of the form to create the contrast and define the shape. The starting point for a new work begins with the placement of the center of interest and then the use of values. The last things checked, as I finish the artwork, are the overall values. Can I lighten or darken an area for greater visual impact?
