AWA Pick-up Time in Phoenix

This was a November juried show, Arizona Watercolor Association for juried members, centennial celebration hosted at the Mesa Cultural Art Center. This building is absolutely the most wonderful environment to have a hanging art show. The has ended, a long run, “Show Low Arizona Open House Sunday” was picked up this week. I personally enjoy my art hang on the wall. Over the years the art has been easy to live with and a enjoy waking up to every morning. It is my pleasure to share my art with you.

Saturday trip to Phoenix for the AAG Show

The Arizona Artists Guild (AAG) handled their Spring Juried Show differently this year. The artists hand delivered their work to Phoenix on Saturday morning; to be juried. Those not juried into the show came back Saturday afternoon to pick up their work. The wait was a great excuse for a leisurely lunch. Fortunately, all three of my pieces were selected for the exhibition.

The focus for this oil pastel painting was to incorporate the black color of the surface into the hawk by highlighting the feathers allowing the background provide the illusion of the shadows. I feel his personality was captured.

The reference photograph was provided by my neighbor Alan Stephenson from his motorcycle trip through Morocco 2000 miles to the Cape of South Africa. The painting became a different approach for my style expressed in a simplistic design.

Young Desert Bighorn is a Winner

Tuesday the 3rd was pick-up time from the Sedona Art Center (SAC) for juried art pieces. The Ram was an award winner in the Professional Pastel Division. At the same time, there was a two day show overlay with the SAGA (Sedona Area Guild of Artists) where he won his second award from Jerry Smith, curator of the American and Western American Art Phoenix Museum. Better than any award, Jerry Smith was able to explain my intent for the painting. It can’t get much better than to have your art communicate with the viewer. This  Big Boy’s next stop will the July TBS (Texas Bighorn Society) Fund raiser.

SAGA always has a People’s Choice award. This year we had the visitor comment on why they liked their choice.
One of the Desert Ram’s comments: “The detail. It appealed to me more than any of the others. Detail and beauty.”

Also Shown in the two day SAGA Show with above Ram:

A few of the People’s Choice comments:
“Drew me in – a place I would like to be.”
“The almost – reality inviting me thru the door.”
“I love the ‘Santa Fe’ look and feel.”

Snow in Sedona, Village of Oak Creek (VOC)

We've had two show days in Sedona. With that said, I wanted to share our Red Rocks dressed in snow along with my back and front yard snow scenes. The most snow we’ve seen at one time during our 8 winters living in VOC.

Front Yard

Believe, there are red rocks behind the roof across the street.

These are the red rocks from my studio window. Tough life visually.

VOC is at 4500' the red rock you are seeing would be, give or take, about 6,000'

Pick-up Trip to Phoenix

It is time to start picking up painting in Phoenix from the last November’s juried shows deliveries. This trip was for Arizona Artists Guild (AAG), juried show for AAG juried member at Beatitudes Campus, Glendale Arizona to celebrate Arizona’s centennial. It’s like having your kids come home on spring break. My painting are easy to live with and are missed when off to a gallery, a show or shared with a collector.

"Peoples Choice Award"

One award was given at the show which was a “People’s Choice Award. For me this award is more important than “Best of Show,” even though I’ll take a Best of Show any day of the week. Best of Show is the opinion of one juror; with People’s Choice awards a whole bunch of people have to like the art during the period of time it is hanging in the show.

This one of my favorite paintings; each morning I woke to this native high desert flowering plant. It kept bugging me until I committed to paint their portrait. They were happy and I was pleased with the results. Hope you also enjoy this watercolor.

I’m fortunate to have a wonder friend and neighbor, Paula Potter, a photographer who just loves to travel and share her adventures with me. The blue door first caught my attention and then you are able to move into and visit this notable hollyhock garden at the historical La Posada Hotel in Winslow Arizona. The color of and shadows on the blue door were my challenge for this watercolor. Enjoy your travels.

Young Desert Ram Winner at SAC

"Young Desert Ram" oil pastel painging

Sedona Art Center had their reception and awards presentation Friday evening. This young Ram came away with his award. As a member of SAC, for the past five years, the experience has been humbling. Each year an oil pastel animal painting has been entered and each has come away with an award. There is one more painting, in my head to get out on mat board, for next year’s entry.  After 2013, more than likely I will be growing in a new direction. Enjoy my little boy.
