Friday, Surprise Awards from NAWS

Friday was an emotional day for me at the first fall season Northern Arizona Watercolor Society monthly meeting.

The Spring NAWS Show was held in May at which time show awards were selected by juror John Salminen, a signature member of numerous art societies including the AWS and NWS. John has received more than 200 awards in national and international exhibitions.

In the May show, John chose my watercolor to be the recipient of his Juror’s Award; this is the painting the juror liked best in the show. In the September NAWS meeting, I received two additional, even more special awards for this watercolor painting: the People’s Choice Award and the NAWS Member’s Choice Award.

I’ve felt this recognition is far more difficult to accumulate during the two week duration of the show: votes from the public; even greater from my fellow artists. I was touched by this acknowledgment from the membership. Friday was a good high energy day.

Sky Harbor Airport Museum Show, Phoenix

Sky Harbor Museum Show has a cute name and subject this year for their fall show. Birds, Blooms and Bugs will be the theme for the show. It will be interesting to see how many bug paints are entered into this juried show.

I love bugs, just not into painting bugs. Therefore, I have two birds and two blooms being submitted for jury consideraton. Here they are:

Birds:

The Green Jay is a beautiful, colorful approx 9” bird found in South Texas.

The configuration of these old gateposts, with native grasses and flowers, show their construction design along with the character and texture of the wood. This subject is a natural stage for the Texas Green Jay.

"This African Ostrich has attitude in spades." He was found in the middle of the road on a bike trip to the Cape by my adventurous neighbors.

Blooms:

My yard is the resource for many paintings. Enjoy this beautiful sunny Sedona day and our native pink prickly pear cactus flower.

Love painting from my yard. This is one of the most beautiful Trumpet Vines in the yard. Its flowers and bean seeds are the largest of all my 9 vines on the fences. This flower group is on the fence next to a large Donkey Ears Cactus; year after year they seems to enjoy each other company as the flowers grow through the ears of the donkey cactus.

The show starts on November 2 thru May 4, 2014. Entries needed to be in on September 13th. The artist almost needs to work a year ahead for juried shows. Notification of acceptance into the show will be October 4th. This show, not being a membership show, is open to all artists living in Arizona. There will be lots of artists and many more painting for the museum to select from. I enter 4 images to possibly get one in the show.

Enjoy the cooler temperatures and smells of September fall in the air!
